Q & A Session

I get lots of emails from people asking questions like this:

Hi,
im just wanting to know how you go about taking photos at these waterpolo & other swimming events because you have some awsome photos & id like to do the same over here in australia.
What kind of camera gear would be good & what do u use ?
Is it hard to get "press credentials" ?
& just another thing, what is this remote camera trigger thing u say u will be using at the swimming events ? Does it work good & how ?

Here is my response to the above email:

Xxxx,

Thanks for writing.

First, regarding the gear. I shoot with a Canon EOS 30D and a Canon 20D ... on the 30D I have a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lens (the "IS" Image Stabilization is a life saver). On the 20D I have a 24-70mm f/2.8L for the close range shots and wider angle shots.

That's a lot of equipment for most people. You can get some great sports shots with a lot less money spent (if that's an issue) with something like a Canon S3IS but you will not look nearly as cool.

One thing to note is that often my equipment is my "ticket" in to events ... I walk in and people always assume I'm with a magazine or newspaper or something and they never ask me questions ...except maybe " are you with the newspaper?" which I always answer yes since I do sell images to my local paper every once in a while.

Regarding press credentials, I rarely bother with them. Sometimes I do if it's a big event and I can easily find out who the organizer or press liaison is in advance ... but normally I just show up. I've found that looking like a pro and acting like a pro is normally enough, I'll even dress like a pro with a photo vest.

Regarding the remote trigger devices, I only recently bought them and will use them for the first time next weekend at a swim meet. So, I'm not sure yet how they will work out, but I'm sure they will be helpful to some degree. The units are a pair of PocketWizard Plus II's and a CM-N3-P trigger cable from http://www.pocketwizard.com/ . Most people use the pocket wizards to fire remote flashes, but with the camera trigger cable you can fire a remote camera.

My plan is to hand-hold my 30D with a 100-400mm IS L lens to follow the action and get shots of individual athletes and then tripod mount my 20D with a wider lens to take in more of the whole event.

The pocket wizard will allow me to trigger the remote 20D in two different ways: If I mount the pocket wizard on the hot shoe of my 30D it will trigger the 20D every time I take a shot with the 30D ... the other option is to remove the pocket wizard from the hot shoe and simply press the "test" button on the transmitter every time I want the remote camera to trigger. ... basically this will allow me to be in two places at once and getting two different shots of the same subject at once Smile

Cheers,

Allen
